Excerpt
As long ago as 1962, RenC Dumont drew attention to the dire situation faced by African peasants as a result of neocolonial development and the activities of minority groups who had recently acceded to power, in his book L'Afrique noire est malpartie. His findings were largely ignored by politicians and economists, and in 1980 he returned to the fray, publishing L'Afique itranglie, in which he criticized economic policies being carried out in Africa and pointed to the heavy burden of debt that would have to be borne by the poor. Subsequently, he was shocked by the rapidity of desert encroachment on settlements and agricultural land in the Sahel, and he reacted by publishing the book under review. In it he analyses the economic collapse of tropical Africa and sees the Sahel as being on the path to destruction.
